Identifying other Letterboxers

From: Alafair (ms_alafair@yahoo.com) | Date: 2002-11-09 17:41:47 UTC-08:00

Jodi,

My LBNA patch is on the small pack I carry with me. I know this sounds weird, but if I am out and I see others who I think might be letterboxes, if I am not comfortable just going up to them and asking, I shift the pack around so that the patch shows. It's brightly colored for its small size, so stands out against my black pack. It is fun to run into others and exchange stamps and friendly hellos, but caution always comes first.

I do go out alone at times (always with cell phone and pepper spray very handy) and I've sadly had to learn to be more wary. If you are out alone, trust your gut and if it feels wrong, try to remove yourself from the area as quickly and safely as possible.

I'm sure others have insights as well.

Hello and help,

boxers know each other? Aside from seeing each other
at meet and greets, or making personal plans, I would
not know without seeing them carry a logbook and stamp
stuff. Being new, I am still careful of others while I
am out, and have not noticed anyone wearing a logo
patch.  Enlighten a new boxer.

How about a "secret password" that letterboxers can use when they see
others who might be letterboxers on the trail? It would have to be
something that wouldn't make every person with a backpack think we've
lost our minds. Maybe a question to ask, that another letterboxer
would respond to a certain way, but other people would treat as
ordinary conversation. Any ideas?

I ask "are you an LBNA member"? If they say yes we are all set and do an exchange. If they say no and ask about it, I say its an unorganized hiking club......Chuck and Molly

The times we have met other LBers on the trail, there is something about their activities that indicates they are LBing.  Such as searchng around stumps and trees, or taking compass bearings, and usually holding papers in theor hands.

Today we met Flower Lady and Kebbie on the trail at Northwest Park.  We asked, Are you letter boxing?  Thats all it took.

What a great weekend to be out and about!!!!!

You can also check out other hikers hands - are they covered in ink?  It's a good indication that they just might be letterboxers!

I have had meetings on the trail twice.  The first time, I ran into Psychomommy and The Turtle.  By some miraculous "Psychommy ESP" she knew exactly who I was and asked "Are you Firefly?"  Good thing it was me, someone else might have looked at her a little funny!

The second meeting was last week.  I met VirginiaWaterBird on the trail.  Scott and I were looking for one of her boxes.  She passed us and said hello.   Then she turned around and said "Are you boxers?"  I think the fact that we were carrying pieces of paper and arguing about compass directions probably clued her in!

Actually, I looked in vain for papers or compasses; you must
have had them well-hidden. But you didn't walk like "just out for a
walk in the park" folks, so I slowed down, and then I heard one of
you say, "There's the bridge", and I knew!
